01 Martha

Martha & Niki In 2010, Swedish friends Martha Nabwire and Niki Tsappos were the first ever female hip hop dance duo to beat all their opponents at the most important international street dance competition, Juste Debout, in Paris. Martha moved from Uganda to Sweden as a teenager, while Niki was adopted from Ethiopia as a baby.
This documentary not only films two successful dancers in action, but also two young adults who are grappling with very different life questions. Where are your roots, and what elements of your culture do you bring with you from your homeland? How can you keep your cultural heritage alive, and how can you deal with all of these things within an ambitious friendship?

MrGaga

Tomer Heymann’s film Mr. Gaga tells the story of Ohad Naharin. Meeting him at a critical turning point in his personal life, this spirited and insightful documentary will introduce you to a man with great artistic integrity and an extraordinary vision. Filmed over a period of eight years, director Tomer Heymann mixes intimate rehearsal footage with an extensive unseen archive and breathtaking dance sequences. This is the narrative of the renowned choreographer and artistic director of the Batsheva Dance Company, an artistic genius who redefined the language of modern dance.
Naharin developed the Gaga movement language over the course of the last several years. There is no main concept of Gaga. Rather than a technique or a vocabulary, it is a philosophy of how to use one’s body; a toolbox that a dancer can use with any movement technique. Gaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body.

FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN (1810-1849)
24 Préludes, op. 28

Intermission

SERGEI PROKOFIEV (1891-1953)
Piano Sonata no. 6 in A major, op. 82

Ιn collaboration with Kalamata Municipal Conservatory

Following the programme of Revolutionary dances of Isadora Duncan, this evening's concert regards battles. Personal ones.
[...] In June 1939, Stalin’s secret police, arrested Vsevolod Meyerhold, a famous director and friend of Prokofiev, shortly before he began rehearsing Semyon Kotko, the composer’s most recent opera. One month later, Meyerhold’s wife was murdered while he was executed in February of the next year, a fact that was never publicly acknowledged, let alone even known about until after Stalin’s rule had ended. At the same period, Prokofiev received an official request to compose for Stalin's sixtieth birthday. In this climate, he also began composing his 6th Sonata, whose tragic dimension, in this light, reflects criticism of the barbaric regime, rather than the historic events of the period to come.
Chopin’s 24 Préludes were completed exactly a century earlier. It seems that a significant number of them were written in Paris before Chopin's trip to Mallorca in the winter of 1838/9, where he was accompanied by Georges Sand. The couple chose the Balearic Island hoping that its climate would help the composer's poor health. However, when the strictly Catholic residents discovered that composer and writer were not married, they did not facilitate their stay. Under these difficult circumstances of ill health and hostility, Chopin completed and edited his 24 Préludes. [...]
